About Devin Piper

Devin J. Piper advocates for individuals and families whose lives have been permanently affected by medical malpractice, wrongful death, and catastrophic injuries stemming from preventable failures in care, systemic negligence, and institutional misconduct. Known for his meticulous case preparation, strategic approach to litigation, and ability to navigate complex medical and factual matters, he has helped clients pursue accountability in several high-stakes cases.

He works closely with colleagues, clients, experts, and trial teams to investigate, develop, and litigate complex cases from inception through trial. In 2024, Devin was part of the trial team that tried a case in Cook County that resulted in a record $39.9 million verdict on behalf of a 37-year-old man who was left permanently disabled following the failure to treat his apparent symptoms that could have prevented a stroke. The case was recognized by TopVerdict.com as one of the Top 20 Jury Verdicts in Illinois in 2024.

Devin was also part of the trial teams that secured a record $7.25 million medical malpractice verdict on behalf of a 32-year-old woman who underwent a hysterectomy following negligent complications during the procedure and delayed recognition of a postpartum hemorrhage, and a $6.84 million verdict on behalf of a patient who sustained permanent, life-altering injuries due to a misdiagnosis. In addition, he helped obtain a $3 million settlement on behalf of the family of a young man who died while in the custody of Cook County Jail following an alleged failure to provide appropriate mental health and medical care.

Beyond his litigation practice, Devin is actively involved in the legal community and mentoring law students. He serves on the Illinois State Bar Association Assembly and is a member of the Illinois Trial Lawyers Association and the Chicago Bar Association. Drawing on his experience in competitive trial advocacy, Devin remains actively involved in mentoring and developing future trial lawyers. He delivered a presentation on Trial Preparation to members of the ITLA at the Practice Tips for the Young Lawyer Webinar hosted by the ITLA Young Lawyers Division and spoke on a Personal Injury Law Panel hosted by UIC Law's Personal Injury Law Society. He has also volunteered as a trial coach and judge for the American Association for Justice Student Trial Advocacy Competition, helping students strengthen the courtroom skills essential to effective trial practice.

Devin's passion for trial advocacy is rooted in hands-on legal experience. He first joined Clifford Law Offices as a law clerk in 2022 and began practicing as an attorney after passing the Illinois Bar in 2023. Prior to joining Clifford Law Offices, Devin gained a range of legal experience through judicial and governmental internships, including serving as a judicial extern for the Hon. Bridget Hughes of the Circuit Court of Cook County and as an intern with the State's Attorney's Offices in Champaign and St. Clair counties.

Devin is a graduate of the University of Illinois Chicago School of Law, where he graduated cum laude. During law school, he was a member of the school's nationally recognized trial advocacy team and competed in national competitions in Houston, Texas. He has since served as a coach for the law school's trial advocacy teams that have competed in national competitions.

While at the University of Illinois Chicago School of Law, Devin served as Vice President of the American Constitution Society and was a member of the Chicago Bar Association, Corporate Law Society, Future Trial Attorneys Association, Illinois Trial Lawyers Association, and American Bar Association.

Devin graduated from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in 2019, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in political science and communications.
