About Joseph Murtha

Joseph Murtha is a veteran trial attorney with over 25 years of experience as both a prosecutor and criminal defense attorney, practicing in Maryland State and Federal courts. He successfully defended Linda Tripp against charges arising from her taping of conversations with Monica Lewinsky, achieving dismissal through a sophisticated legal challenge. He also served as lead counsel for Baltimore City Police Officer William Porter in the first prosecution arising from the in-custody death of Freddie Gray, a case that ended in a mistrial and eventual dismissal. He served as a law clerk to the Honorable James B. Dudley of the Howard County Circuit Court in 1990, then as a prosecutor with the Howard County State's Attorney's Office from 1990 to 1995, and later as a Faculty Advisor to the National College of District Attorneys in 1994. He has defended individuals in drug, sex offense, violent crime, and white collar cases, and has successfully prevented the government from seeking the death penalty in a drug and murder conspiracy. He was awarded the United States District Court John Adams Award and has been named a Super Lawyer annually.
