Background

Spencer J. Hattemer, Esq. is an Attorney at Cooper Elliott in Columbus, Ohio, practicing civil rights, complex litigation, and advocacy for individuals harmed by corporate and institutional misconduct. He combines elite legal training with more than a decade of frontline experience as a union and community organizer. Hattemer's prior experience includes service as an attorney at the Ohio Justice & Policy Center through the Promise Institute for Human Rights Fellowship; as a Law Clerk for the Hon. R. Guy Cole, Jr. of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit; and as a Law Clerk for the Hon. Edmund A. Sargus, Jr. of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Ohio. During law school, he worked on national prescription opioid litigation, black lung disease representation, and immigration matters, and published articles on complex litigation. His current work covers civil rights litigation, parole hearings, clemency and expungement applications, labor union representation, and pharmaceutical accountability cases. He earned his Juris Doctor from UCLA School of Law, graduating second in his class with specializations in Critical Race Studies and Public Interest Law & Policy, and was inducted into the Order of the Coif. He is admitted to the State Bars of Ohio and West Virginia.
