Before entering private practice, he had an academic career as a law professor teaching legislation, civil procedure, and administrative law at the University of Oklahoma, Arizona State University, and Washington and Lee University, and was a visiting scholar at the Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law in Heidelberg, Germany. He graduated cum laude from the University of Michigan Law School, where he served as Executive Editor of the Michigan Law Review, and subsequently pursued doctoral work at the University of Oxford on the regulatory role of litigation.
