James Hoy

James Hoy is a shareholder at Maring Williams Law Office licensed in North Dakota and Minnesota. He represents clients in catastrophic car crashes, trucking disasters, oilfield incidents, and other serious personal injury and wrongful death matters. He is a Great Plains Super Lawyer in the personal injury category since 2023, and was honored as a Rising Star from 2017 through 2021. Best Lawyers in America has recognized him annually since 2022 in plaintiffs' personal injury litigation, naming him Lawyer of the Year in 2023, and has since added recognition in commercial litigation and product liability. Jim grew up in West Fargo, North Dakota, and attended the University of North Dakota, where he captained the men's basketball team and earned a business management degree and an MBA. He then attended UND School of Law, serving as editor-in-chief of the North Dakota Law Review and president of the Student Trial Lawyers Association, and was elected to the Order of Barristers. After law school, he clerked for North Dakota Supreme Court Justice Dale V. Sandstrom before joining the firm. He has served as a past president of the North Dakota Association for Justice, past chairperson of the Pattern Jury Instruction Commission, and currently chairs the North Dakota Federal Practice Committee. In 2021, he received the State Bar Association of North Dakota Community Service Award after the Kindred boys' basketball team won its first state championship. In 2025, he was inducted into the West Fargo High School Hall of Fame.
