About Steve Zimmerman
Steve Zimmerman joined Smith & Vinson as a Senior Associate Attorney focusing on high-stakes felony criminal defense. Before law school, he earned a B.A. in Film and Digital Media from Baylor University in 2009 and worked as a video journalist at KWTX-TV in Waco covering major stories across Central Texas. He began his legal education at South Texas College of Law in Houston in 2012, where he competed nationally on varsity mock trial and moot court teams, interned with the Harris County and Fort Bend County District Attorney's Offices, and received the CALI Award for the highest grade in his class in legal writing and research. After passing the Texas Bar Exam, Steve joined the Brazos County District Attorney's Office in 2016, prosecuting felony cases of all levels and developing the county's first pre-trial diversion program, which diverted more than 500 felony defendants away from the criminal justice system. In 2023 he transitioned to the North Hill Country Public Defender's Office, representing clients facing serious felony charges. He now applies that experience on both sides of the courtroom to the defense of clients at Smith & Vinson.
