About James Hoy

James L. Hoy was born in Sioux Falls, South Dakota and graduated from Lincoln Senior High School in 1979. He earned his Bachelor of Arts from the University of South Dakota in 1983, where he was inducted into Mortar Board, Omicron Delta Kappa, and Phi Beta Kappa. He received his Juris Doctor from the University of South Dakota School of Law in 1986 and was admitted to the South Dakota State Bar on the same day. During law school, he had two articles published in the South Dakota Law Review and served as Senior Comments Editor. In 1986, he clerked for the Honorable Peter T. Fay, United States Circuit Court Judge of the Eleventh Judicial Circuit, in Miami, Florida. In 1987, he entered private practice at Hoy and Hoy in Sioux Falls. In 1993, he was appointed Special Assistant Attorney General for South Dakota. He joined Hoy Trial Lawyers in 2004 and has practiced law in Sioux Falls for over 27 years, with a focus on general personal injury and wrongful death litigation in state and federal courts.
